Documentary Theater - Sahar Assaf

Documentary theater is a non-fiction form of theater that uses a variety of documentary material to represent and respond to real people and events. Participants will have a hands-on experience of making documentary theater by working in groups of 3 to 4 members to conceive, research, write and direct a short documentary play (15 to 20 minutes) on a topic that concerns them.


Requirements:

Papers, pens, and scissors


Earphones


Recording devices (participants can use their smart phones)


A laptop or a desktop (to save information and download audio interviews and edit them)


Audacity (free software to be downloaded before Phase 3 begins)


About the instructor:

Sahar Assaf is a theater actress, director, and lecturer in AUB. She recently co-established the AUB Theater Initiative with Robert Myers, which aims to place theatrical performance and study at the center of intellectual life at AUB. She is also a co-founder of Tahweel Ensemble Theater, a Beirut-based theater group dedicated to producing a varied repertory of quality productions in Lebanon, the Arab world and abroad.

Scenography - Dr. Khalifa AlHajri

Participants will learn theatrical scenic design i.e. stage design including lights, props, décor, and costumes. They will learn the skill of reading and analyzing a script to transform it into a tangible, accurate and aesthetic scene.

About the instructor:

Dr. Al Hajri is an Assistant professor in Scenography & Fine Arts. He graduated from University of Leeds, UK, and currently works at The Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts, Stage Design Department – Kuwait. He is a critic of theatrical works, and is a member in The International Organization of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians (OISTAT).

Scriptwriting - Mamdouh Hamada

This workshop is a complete guide to scriptwriting. Participants will learn how to knot & untie a plot, develop characters, raise conflict, and much more so that, by the end of it, each one can write a creative and professional script.


About the instructor:

Mamdouh Hamada is a Syrian journalist, writer, and cartoonist. He holds an MA in Journalism from Belarus State University in Minsk, and a PhD degree in Philology that he earned in 1994. Hamada also studied film directing at the Belorussian State Academy of Arts. He has directed a couple of short films such as “I’m still Alive,” and has published plenty of caricatures, novels and short stories collections. In 1995, Hamada began writing scripts, many of which fall under drama and comedy, and his most famous one is The Lost Village (TV Series).

A Practical Introduction to Physical Theatre - Thomas Wilson

This workshop will help participants explore some of the principles and tools of Physical Theatre, equipping them with ways of thinking about and making theatre that draw on this wide field. Working in a multi-layered way, participants will explore methods of working from and through the body, building an understanding of what physical theatre might be and how its tools and principles might be useful for any actor or performer.


Requirements:

Participants should wear lose clothing and have a pair of training shoes for some exercises.


About the instructor:

Thomas Wilson has been teaching theatre & performance for the past twenty years, in a variety of institutions and contexts. He is currently co-Program Director for Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance, and is specialized in teaching approaches to devised & physical theatres, and practical artistic research. Wilson is also an Associate Editor of Theatre, Dance and Performance Training Journal, co-Chair of Theatre Deli (UK). He initially trained in voltige (equestrian gymnastics), competing at National and European level in the mid-1990s.

COMMEDIA DELL'ARTE - Fabrizio Paladin

An International Course of Comic Theatrical Art - The main goal of the workshop is to impart to participants the fundamental building blocks for creating and performing Commedia. The recovery of the expressive body as a unique and fundamental scenic instrument, the importance of the art of the actor in scene creation, the respect of the dramatic functions of each character, and the collaboration between the performers on stage, all leading the story through to an organic solution of the conflicts presented.


Requirements:


Comfortable clothes suitable for physical work. Long-sleeved clothes and trousers dark-colored without visible brands are preferable.

A black cotton cap or other material to be put on the head can be a swimming cap or a black pantyhose.


Musical instruments regardless of their ability to play them


Theatrical masks such as comedy masks.


About the instructor:

Fabrizio Paladin is an award winning actor, playwright, director and musician. He holds a graduate degree from University of Bologna in Literature and Philosophy, and has extensive expertise in Commedia Dell’Arte and improvisation. He has taught classes and workshops in Slapstick Comedy, Commedia Dell’Arte and Improvisation in many countries, colleges, and art schools. He was the winner of “PremioOmaggio a Giorgio Gaber” as best Italian talent in music and theater, and nominated as best actor at the Fringe Festival in Rome in 2015.

Foundations in Voice - Mandy Fox

This course focuses on foundations for vocal performance though practical techniques and personalized projects. Participants will gain skills for improved projection, articulation, breath support, and much more, while working closely with the instructor on a short project tailored to their individual needs. Projects might be a monologue, work presentation, speech, poetry reading, or any other public speaking situation.

About the instructor:

Mandy Fox is an actor, director, author, and narrator who has spent the last 20 years performing, directing, and coaching all over the world, from Broadway to London West End. Mandy is a graduate of the Yale School of Drama, a member of the Voice and Speech Trainers Association, and the Actors Equity Association. Mandy is an Associate Professor and the Voice Specialist for the Department of Theatre at Ohio State University.

Social Monologue - Sarah Atallah

This workshop is designed to work on the social aspect of a monologue. Each participant will work on his solo skills, and will discover the stage ability to give the society a heard loud voice. Participants will also discover tools that guide them as actors to identify each society traits and identity in order to give them the appropriate and the most efficient performance.


About the instructor:

SarahAtallah is a Lebanese actor, who has an MA in Actors Management from the University of Lebanon, currently pursuing her studies in the field of Social Theater. In addition to her work in puppet and storytelling theater, Atallah is managing theatrical training for children, teenagers, and adults. She has recently developed a program specialized in Dramatics to educate children and teenagers.

Makeup Your Mind: Makeup FX Workshop - Amanda Marie Schaefer

This workshop is for those who are interested in taking makeup and performance into a new world! In the Makeup FX workshop, participants will learn about basic tools; what they are used for and how we can go even further with them when creating. Through each class, participants will learn different characters on themselves using water based paints, eye shadows, and other sfx makeup materials. They will learn the importance of performance and focus their attention on creative freedom through the process.


About the instructor:

Known for her artist name 'Marie;' is a Visual Makeup Special Effects(FX) Artist, with a background in Performing Arts & Choreography. She has shifted into body paint, makeup, FX, and other tools to bring characters and concepts to life. She has worked with artists such as Joyner Lucas, Timbaland, I Prevail, Logic, Jaja Vankova, B-Dash, Plain White T's, World Of Dance, and many others. Marie specializes in costume design, creative direction, character development, and movement coaching/choreography.
